I pace back and forth across the room trying to clear my mind from this Fucking. Feeling.
This pain. Where is this motherfucker?!
I scratch my arms until they’re stinging red, waves of warmth. It doesn’t help. It feels like the small hotel room is pressing in around me. The elegant wallpaper and gold accents around me normally make me feel like royalty, but right now I can’t even look around. It’s just making my head hurt. It’s too bright.
I hop up to close the curtains, hoping that will calm me down. I sit back down. Up and down, up and down. I spot a scab on my leg. With a jump of motivation I pick it off, feeling the sore underneath.
A heavy knocking fills the room. FUCKING FINALLY!
“Where have you been?” I open the door to a stick thin man in a pullover hoodie and jeans.
“I got you your shit, don’t bitch about it. Where’s the money?” He said, dropping a flimsy plastic bag on the ground, not moving an inch further into the hotel room. Wait! Where is the money? Oh, shit. I grab my purse, rooting through it. Tampons, keys, lipstick, empty vials. I throw it all out onto the floor. No, not here. Where is it?! God damn.
Wait! The side pocket. I grab $200 and hand it to him.
He leaves in a rush, I barely notice as I rip the plastic bag open to get to the MMT. 30 vials. That should last a few days. I grab my injector.
<<set $rguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$srcg][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
Mmmmmmm. I breathe in the caramel mocha. Something about the almond milk just makes it smell so decadent. Regular milk just ruins my sensitive stomach. I take a sip. Perfect. Those dummies got it right for once. I snap on the lid and head out of the coffee shop.
Where should I head next? I visited all the spots on the fourth floor already. The third floor is a lot of fast food and junk. And that horrible “Patches” place. Ugh.
Ok, my scarf is still wrapped nicely around my head, sunglasses, check. I have to be down to the first floor in an hour. That should give me enough time to check out Boutique Bleu and maybe Murlowe’s.
I take the escalator down to the second floor, looking up at the giant skylight. Look at the stars up there. Why do they cover the glass with ugly electronic advertisements? It’s nearly 9:00 PM and this place is still packed. Busy bodies scurrying around, enticed by the flashing signs. It’s hard to believe this mall is the best Detroit has to offer. It still has the same desperate feel as the rest of this city.
Oh, look at that gorgeous grey gown in the window! Beading down the length of the sleeves. I hold the color against my skin. Gorgeous. Oh, and it’s McQueen. Of course. Tried and true. I walk up to the counter when my phone rings. <<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$srcg][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
“I don’t even get why, to be honest.” I laugh.
“So what do you do for a living?” He finished off his Manhattan, gesturing to the robot server to pour him another.
“Oh. I’m a construction worker.” Kind of. ¿En qué me estoy metiendo? “And you?”
“I own this place!” He sweeps his hand across the empty bar. I look out at the empty tables. Lots of gold decor. It kind of reminds me of the Mojito and Guarapo bar back home. Like it’s trying to be fancy, and missing the mark a little.
“Wow, I didn’t realize. Well that’s great! This place has been awesome. I love the no-tech thing.” I take a few large gulps of my beer. It’s light and crisp. It calms me, a little.
“It’s funny how people call this no-tech now.” He chuckled, grabbing his freshly made drink from the silicon hand. “I guess everything is relative.” Something about him is really making me anxious.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$srcg][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
“Oh this restaurant is just spectacular, don’t you think?” Tiffany asks. The excitement has put a glimmer into her eyes. She loves all of this pretentious food stuff. I look around the jam packed room, hundreds of people. Dozens of holograms explaining how dinner works here.
“It’s pretty interesting! I hear we actually may be getting a MicroFoam of our own back in Toronto. There’s plans in the works,” I respond. I don’t know if I would go to another one of these, but it’s certainly a novel experience.
“Wow, okay. Well thanks for taking me on your business trip, sweetheart.” She smiles at me, scooping foam onto a cracker. She says it like she gave me any choice.
“Of course, you know I can’t stand coming all this way on business trips without you.”
I reach up to the metal disk above our heads with a series of nozzles. Pomegranate. pâté, gross. Let’s try coconut. I pull down the nozzle and spray some coconut foam onto my plate. This is too weird for me, honestly.
She smiles at me and adjusts the flowers pinned in her hair while she’s talking. Just another hour before I need to meet Jason. Or, Jeff was it? I had better get going.
“Alright Tiff, I am off to have some drinks with a couple of my coworkers to go over our big presentation tomorrow!” Just keep a straight face, act natural.
“I’m so excited for tomorrow, you’re going to do amazing. I’ll see you later tonight back at the Dooj.” She leans in for a kiss. I wipe her lipstick off of my lips and beeline it out of the restaurant.<div id="center">

I line the injector up to my forearm, jam in the clear vial, and feel the cold metal against my forearm.
With the press of a switch and a quick ping, relief. I barely flinch from the pain anymore. The sharp stab of the needle is an acquired taste, like how you start to enjoy the taste of the alcohol as much as you do the effect.
Looking down at my arm, my vision blurs slightly. A triangle of small dots joins a sea of other small dots, like a constellation. I trace the lines of veins up my arm, feeling the warmth flood through me. Humming. Electric energy.
I touch my fingertips together one at a time, smiling to myself. Flipping my hand to see lines and veins. Why does it look so ugly? I hate looking at my hands. I’m so old. My mouth is dry. Dusty. And my tongue feels heavy. It’s too warm in here. I think I need water.
I get up and pour myself a glass from the tap. My pupils are huge! Holy shit. I smile at myself in the mirror. I touch my face and run my hands through my long dark hair.
This water isn’t cold enough. I leave the tap running. It’s still not cold enough.
I’m going to get ice. I tug my dress down and grab my ice bucket, heading out the door of my hotel room.
<<set $rguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>

Ahh, it’s Jeremy.
“Hello sweetheart, how are you?” I ask him.
I swipe through a projected catalogue, tapping the grey gown I wanted and selecting a size.
“Darling! I am doing great. I’d be better if I wasn’t missing you so much!”
“Oh, I miss you too honey.”
I wave my watch over the paychip, and with a ding the cashier dispenses my packaged dress.
“What are you up to right now? Are you buying anything… sexy?” He asks. Tsk. I feign laughter. A skill I’ve really learned to master over the last 31 years.
“Jeremy, I’m in public!” He laughs in response. “I just bought a gorgeous grey dress that you. Are. Going. To. Love.”
“I can’t wait to see you in it. And out of it.”
Before I know it I’m out of the store and at the drop point. My body just went on autopilot. I guess I’ve done this enough times by now. I peek into the abandoned storefront
“You are incorrigible. Well on that note, I need to get out of this shopping mall before it closes!”
Perfect, it’s unlocked. So much dust in here. Tsk.
“Alright. Well know that I’ll be dreaming of you tonight,” he responds.
I go behind the counter, the only thing in the empty storefront. There’s the suitcase. I pick it up and replace it with an envelope from my purse.
“I love you.”
“Jeremy! Hello sweetheart, how are you?” I ask him.
I swipe through a projected catalogue, tapping the grey gown I wanted and selecting a size 16.
“Darling! I am doing great. What are you up to right now? Are you buying anything… sexy?” Tsk. I feign laughter. A skill I’ve really learned to master over the last 31 years. I wave my watch over the paychip, and with a ding the cashier dispenses my packaged dress.
“Jeremy, I’m in public! But you know what, I just bought a gorgeous grey dress that you. Are. Going. To. Love.”
“I can’t wait to see you in it... And out of it.”
“You are incorrigible. Well on that note, I need to get out of this shopping mall before it closes!”

Before I know it I’m out of the store and at the drop point. My body just went on autopilot. I guess I’ve done this enough times by now. I peek into the abandoned storefront, checking the door. Perfect, it’s unlocked. So much dust in here. Tsk..
“I love you.”
I go behind the counter, the only thing in the empty storefront. There’s the suitcase. I pick it up and replace it with an envelope from my purse.
“I love you too.”
Mission accomplished. It’s time to get the heck out of here without anyone spotting me. You would think they’d give me something a little less conspicuous to carry than a suitcase. Morons.
<<set $bguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$srcg][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
He takes a long drink of his Manhattan. I follow suit and take a long swig of my beer.
“So you’re from Mexico. Here illegally, I assume.”
Some of the beer goes down the wrong windpipe. Fuck! I cough it up.
“What? I’m from Phoenix.” I wipe my mouth and try to compose myself. How did he know? Did my accent give me away? I’ve worked so hard to get rid of it.
“No one comes to this hotel, a no-tech hotel, unless they don’t want their name put into GloBID. Here there’s no fingerprint scanning, no ID required...”
“Hey, I just really prefer a m-”
“Oh come on, you didn’t come here for the decor, Benny.” This prick just cut me off.
“What is it to you anyway?” Fuck what do I say? “I can give you money if that’s what you’re after!” I polish off the last of my beer to try and calm my nerves. Do I need to book it out of here? I sit on the edge of my seat.
“No, no! Listen, I’m not attacking you, just making conversation. Everyone is welcome here. Anywaysl, I’m tired so I’m going to retire for the night, but it’s been a pleasure meeting you.” He takes the last sip of his drink. He sure finished that one quickly. In a moment, he’s gone to the elevator.
<<set $gguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$srcg][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I don’t think she knew I was lying. Sometimes I wonder if she’s suspicious what I’m up to on these trips. I mean, she has started coming with me everytime so… maybe.
I give my watch a shake, calling over my rental. Here it comes. It pulls up to the curb, sleek and black. I miss my car. It wasn’t worth it to drive here, though. I hop into the passenger seat.
“Grand Goulding Hotel, please,” I say to the voice recognition.
And it’s off into traffic. I try to get a glimpse of the sky, but the high rises are packed too tightly now for me to see past them.
I click through my watch’s settings. Where did he go. Oh, it was Jason. I pull up the photos onto my glasses. Woof! Can this car go any faster? I’m caught off guard when it stops, and says we’ve arrived, adjusting my crotch straining against my suit pants.
The three floor hotel is wedged between two high rise buildings. The Grand Goulding. It must be the dodgiest place in Detroit, and that’s saying something.<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
Pushing my way out of the hotel door, I stumble slightly. No one is out here. Thank fuck, I don’t feel like talking to anyone right now. I don’t think there are many people here anyway. Everyone prefers those fancy-ass robot hotels.
I wonder what the other floors are like? I guess they’re changing. Under construction. Only the top floor, the third floor is open. This must be the best floor anyway. Look at the beautiful wallpaper.
Designs of lace and flourishes dance over each other, The colours are so vivid! I trace my hand over gold end tables and framed pictures. A beautiful garden, a beautiful woman. I wonder if she is royalty? A queen with a grand estate, a castle, maybe.
Oh, the ice machine. I almost passed it. I turn in and press my ice bucket under the machine which grinds so loudly the sound gives me goosebumps. I unclench my teeth when it finishes.
I notice the tension in my neck, my shoulders, I try to let it all go. How long had I been clenching up like that?
“Kelsey.” A voice surprises me.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
This car ride is taking forever. Why did the only no-tech hotel have to be ages away from all of the action in town.
I look out through the dark at lights flickering in buildings. Hologram advertisements are the only colour in sight. I really detest Detroit. It’s so oppressive. All these buildings like some kind of never ending garden maze that you can’t get beyond. I need a break from the city.
I wonder what Melanie is going to do for her 60th. I hope she takes us somewhere great for her weekend away. Paris for Janice was such a snooze. You can hardly see the Eiffel Tower anymore from against the skyscrapers behind it. Maybe she’ll do New Zealand. Maybe somewhere in New India.
Maybe… Maybe I’ll take a little nap...
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
Maldición.
What am I going to do? Why would he call me out on being from Mexico? Maybe I should pack up my bags and leave.
Okay just keep walking, everything will be okay. I’ve waited long enough, he should already be long up the elevator and in his room.
Where do I go now? It’s damn near impossible getting in and out of any city without being run through the GloBID. This is one of the only hotels in town not hooked up to the system. And this contract is amazing. If I finish this one I’ll have enough money for my wife’s IVF. Then I can go back home.
The door to my hotel room stands in front of me, I was completely in a trance getting up here. I can’t let this man get into my head. Everything is going to be okay.
I swipe my key card.
<<set $gguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
It’s always bizarre being in a no-tech establishment. Relics of the past. A machine at the front desk spews out my key card, which I hastily grab. The elevator gives me a bit of anxiety. It’s like a metal death trap. Who the hell designed these horrifying things?
Ding.
I check my breath. Not bad.
This hallway is so dated. This whole “retro royalty” thing. Real royalty now would be in a holographic sky loft for fucks sake.
Okay. Door 5. Here we go. I straighten my tie and swipe my keycard.
There he is, waiting for me in his briefs. What a little slut.
“Jason. Wow. Hi.” He’s walking towards me. Blonde, lean, beautiful.
“I’m not much of a talker.” His voice is deeper than I expected. He grabs my tie and pulls me towards him. His lips are soft. The smell of cologne takes me over.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I jump in shock. I can’t talk to anyone right now! He’s short, but kind of cute, in a scruffy way. He’s dressed in an ill-fitting button down and slacks.
“The name is Merrit Deschamps, pleased to meet you. I’m the owner of the Grand Goulding. I live at the end of the hall in the penthouse suite.”
“Okay, I’m Kelsey.”
“Oh, I know who you are. You’re quite the celebrity. That Julius fellow is sure offering a lot of money for your head.” When he mentions that name my whole body tenses with surprise. Julius. I feel dizzy. “Don’t worry, I’m not going to sell you out, not as long as you keep paying your bills, anyway... but don’t you think it’s a little risky to have drug dealers show up at your hotel room door?”
“How- how did you know?” Is he friends with Julius? How many other people know? I thought I had gotten far enough away.
“We’re in Detroit, Kelsey. Everyone here is either a drug user or a drug dealer in some capacity. I’ve heard it through the network.” Before I even know what I’m doing, I grab him and push him up against the wall with all my force.
“I swear to FUCK that I will kill you if you don’t keep your goddamn mouth shut.” My voice is trembling. He’s laughing. I start to shake even harder.
“Kelsey, Kelsey, I am not your enemy. I don’t have many customers these days, I’m not in the business of chasing them away. You’ve been here for almost three months. Next time you need your fix, come to me. I’m sure I have what you need. And I’ve always got the newest stuff.”
He pulls my hand down off of his chest. Is he serious? Is this a set-up? I swear to god if he-
“Think about it. I’m just down the hall. Anyways, enjoy the rest of your night.” He dips his head to me in a bow. Clearly sarcastic. He turns away.
I need to get to my hotel room. My mind is on fire.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$srcb][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$srcp][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I toss my bra and underwear in a heap with my dress on the floor. I turn the dial on the shower a far as it will go. Stepping into the water, I grit my teeth against the searing pain. I want everything to hurt.
I think of Julius. The money in the safe in my room. The man who I shot, his blood splattering as his body fell so hard his skull bounced off of the cement with a crack. That awful, awful crack. Somehow the hotel owner here knows, and that happened all the way in New York. Maybe I need to keep running.
I scrub my neck with my loofah. Maybe I will never be able to run far enough. Crack. I shudder, watching his body fall to the concrete.
I scrub my breasts and my stomach, moving down the lengths of each arm, not stopping until everything is raw. I have to work hard to scrub my back, using both hands to get enough pressure, by now I’m panting with the effort.
I can’t trust this guy. But can I use him? Maybe. I need to talk to him tomorrow. If I have to kill this bastard to save myself, goddamnit I’ll do it.
I scrub my legs until my arms are too tired to scrub anymore. I sit in the bottom of the tub and touch the cold tile, ecstasy against my burning skin. That tiny bit of relief sends a wave of emotion over me. I cry there for a while.
I gently towel myself down to dry off, looking at my stinging pink body in the mirror, my reddened flesh. I’m exhausted. I drop into my bed and quickly fall asleep.
<<set $rguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
Back at the Grand Goulding. Tsk. I look around in disgust. I guess it’s a change from the cheap flashing holograms of the rest of Detroit but… Couldn’t they make it a little less sad?
These tacky red chaise lounges. Gold tassels on everything you could possible attach a tassel to. And these robot models look so… it’s almost an uncanny valley effect. Silicon is so dated.
I take the elevator up and hurry to my room. 10. Here we are.
I plop the heavy suitcase onto the bed and drop my shopping haul to the floor.
Did someone just knock on my door? Who is here at this hour? Can’t a girl settle in first?
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
“Hola, baby.”
“Hola, Benny, ¿cómo estás?” It’s so good to hear her voice.
“Estoy bien. Te extraño mucho cariño.”
“Yo también te extraño. Solo un mes más, querido.”
“El dueño del hotel sabe que soy un inmigrante ilegal. Realmente me asustó. Creo que debería irme.” I realize I’m nearly whispering. I doubt anyone here even knows Spanish.
“Dios mío, ¿te amenazó?”
“No, me dijo que no me preocupe. Dijo que la mayoría de las personas que están aquí, se están escondiendo de la GloBID.”
“Pues ten cuidado. ¿Hay algún otro lugar al que puedas ir en Detroit?”
“A ninguna otra parte. Necesito quedarme, pero me preocupa que me chantajee, o algo peor. Sabes que están matando a indocumentados aquí, ¿verdad?”
“Si tienes problemas, usa la pistola que te di.”
“Eres una chica muy dura. I love you, baby.”
“Te amo amor.”
I wave my hand across my screen to hang up. Using the gun she gave me. I sure hope it doesn’t come down to that.
<<set $gguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$srcb][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$srcp][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I grab my pistol from my bag. What an old piece of shit, but it works. It’s not one of those fancy hand-lasers. I put it beside my bed.
Talking to Gabriela helped but I’m still feeling pretty stressed. I’ll flick on the television.
The news, game shows… what am I in the mood for? Oh a Western! Excelente.
I try to keep my eyes open…
But…
<<set $gguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I hear gunshots. I’m walking down an alleyway.
Someone is waiting for me at the end of the alley. I’m too scared to go. I find a side door instead.
I’m in someone’s living room. It’s my living room. My wife is here.
It’s a saloon. I order a beer. I sit down. There’s a shooting range. Wow, this lady is a great shot.
I walk out of the saloon and am back in an alleyway.
It’s a bowling alley. It’s a slide. I slide down the chute and come out the other side into blackness.<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
Ugh, is it morning already?
I had such weird dreams last night. Hmmm the television is off. I must have flicked it off when I was half asleep. And my gun isn’t on the bedside anymore. It’s on the floor. Maybe I knocked that over, too. That’s kind of concerning. I look at the door and it’s still locked tight.
Alright, I had better get dressed and get to work. Johnny will be picking me up soon.
Another day doing the same old thing. I’ve been here for almost a month now. Time has really dragged on.
I put on the same outfit, grab the same work shoes, put the same hard hat under my arm, and off I go.
<<set $gguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
Mierda. Johnny is already here waiting for me. I run on up to the brown car. It’s old, but it works. It still has the human control option. Hard to believe it’s even allowed on the road.
I hop into the backseat.
“Sorry, guy!” I say.
“Hey, no worries Benny. We’ll still make it on time. How are you?”
“I’m okay. I’m pretty tired honestly. I had some nutty dreams last night.”
“What, were you sleep walking again?” He chuckles.
“Culero! Am I never going to live that down?” One time I fell asleep at work and apparently sat up and said some half spanish nonsense. So embarrassing. I feel a twinge of warmth flush my cheeks.
“Hey, sorry, I had to.”
We both share a laugh. Johnny must also be outlaw somehow if he’s working for the same under the table pay as me. Anyone dodging GloBID has their reasons. We’ve never really talked about it though. The less people that know your secrets, the better.
We pull up at an abandoned looking apartment building.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$srcb][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
Underneath the abandoned apartment building, through a back alleyway door, is where our secret construction project is taking place. We’re building some kind of crazy android fighting ring. Apparently people around here are looking for that kind of entertainment? I guess it was more prevalent in New America before it was outlawed. Studies showed that robots had feelings, some form of sentience, and that they deserve rights. But hey, what is a big city if it doesn’t offer you all the illegal amenities you’re looking for?
Time to get right to work. The ring is really coming together from when I started a few weeks ago. This place was a rat infested mess.
It’s been tricky building under such a large building, reconstructing the place without taking out any load bearing beams. It looks great though. I wonder what this basement used to be. Probably something else illegal.
<<set $gguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I am painting today. If I had known, I wouldn’t have bothered bringing the hard hat. Oh well.
Two of us are painting the green room, where the android owners will come to prepare themselves for the big fights.
Ricardo is in here with me. He tackles two walls, I tackle the other two. The work is made pretty easy with the invention of a nanobot spray helps evenly distribute the paint.
“Where are you from Benny?” He asks. I tense up for a moment. I guess it’s safe to say. We’re all avoiding the law in some way here, getting paid under the table without the involvement of the GloBID system.
“Originally, Guadalajara. I moved to Tijuana, and then when that became part of New America I had to leave. Ended up in Navojoa with my wife. And you?”
“Oaxaca. Got involved with some pretty serious shit. Had some scary people after me,” he responds.
“Really, people scarier than the government here?”
“Yes.”
“Merdia. Alright man. You must’ve been a real troublemaker.”
He laughs. I can’t imagine coming here to flee something else. Being here scares the life out of me. Just one more month, then I’ll be back home with my wife. I’ll have enough money to take care of her procedures.
<<set $gguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$srcb][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I step out to use the bathroom and take a quick break.
Who is that woman? She’s talking to Dane, the construction head. She must be the boss. I heard the boss was in her 60s. This woman looks younger than that.
Then again, she’s hidden behind a headscarf, and sunglasses, which she’s wearing inside. Strange choice. As I walk by I overhear part of their conversation.
“Start building these monstrosities?”
“I’m working on getting them smuggled across next week…”
They must be talking about the androids. I had better not keep listening in. Being nosey gets you in trouble, and that’s the last thing I want. I beeline it to the bathroom.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I’m at a concert. I don’t know the band that’s playing. Lights flash across the sea of bobbing heads. I don’t really want to be here, honestly. Do I have anything I can take? I feel my pockets. Nothing.
Who is that girl? She’s looking at me from across the crowd. I walk towards her. We are standing alone in an alley. I… actually don’t think I want to talk to her. I’m going to go. Turning away, I run down the alley into a marketplace.
Everyone is so old here. So much food. Are these all lab grown? Maybe I’ll grab an apple.
Wait, why are my feet wet? Why is it warm? Is this blood? I look down to a stream of red running under my feet.
Why is everyone here looking at me? Goosebumps run up and down my body. I quickly turn around to the stage and try to make out the DJ. No, it’s a band.
I don’t know the band that’s playing. Lights flash across the sea of bobbing heads. I don’t really want to be here, honestly. Do I have anything I can take? I feel my pockets. Nothing.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
Ugh. My fucking head is POUNDING.
A deer looks at me through a copse of trees painted in a golden frame across from my bed.
Where’s my Mint? I roll over. There it is. I pull the bag up onto the side of the bed and grab my metal injector. I grab a vial and replace the empty cartridge in there, throwing it to the ground.
With the press of a button I get relief. I take a deep breath.
I pull out my phone and project it in front of me on the bed, flipping through pages mindlessly.
Jessica is a mom now. Hmm… Hard to believe. I can remember her rolling back and forth on the floor of The Junction because she was tripping out so hard.
I scroll through videos, articles, images, caught up in a blur.
<<set $rguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
Violence is at an all time high in Detroit. Ha. No surprise there.
“Deadly Drugs” Ooh, more drugs have been found laced with that stuff that’s causing seizures. Okay, phew, Mint isn’t on the list.
This is getting depressing. I swipe away my phone and pull out the television remote from my bedside, choosing to project it onto the ceiling.
Rom Com, boring. Horror, no. Oh god, I hate this actor.
This one is good but…
Skin flashes up on the screen. Now we’re talking.
A man pulls up a blonde woman’s skirt, sliding his hand down the front of her panties.
I fluff my pillow up behind my head, and throw the remote back onto the bedside stand.<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$srcb][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
The sound of their moans fill up the room. He’s really going to town! And she’s making a lot of noise. I hate when women do that in porn, it’s so cheesy. I can’t say no to those muscular legs of his though. Maybe I would squeal like an idiot for a piece of that ass.
I reach down and rummage through my bedside drawer pulling out a small silver bullet. I click it on and it begins to vibrate. I slide it down between my thighs. That familiar warmth. I push my pelvis against it, letting the blankets fall off my body.
The moaning continues on the screen above me. He flips her over and slaps her ass while fucking her from behind.
A loud thump. I remember his head, cracking open on the pavement. I scream.
Oh, fuck, it was someone hitting the wall from the next room. I guess this is a little loud. I turn down the volume on the television.
I try to get back into the mood but… fuck this. I turn it off and hop out of bed. I need some coffee.
I try to think of something else, but I can’t get the memory out of my head. His skull cracking open so easily. Maybe I need something stronger than coffee. A shiver rolls over me.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$srcb][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$srcp][$gop]][img[$src9]]
“Merrit, what a pleasure.” Ugh, this weasel of a man. His eyes are always darting all over the place. And he showed up at my door in a robe?!
“Melanie! So good to see you again, it’s been too long.”
“Indeed. Can I help you? We’re scheduled for tomorrow morning, I thought?” The sooner I get him out of here, the sooner I get my beauty rest.
“I… I know, I just was hoping I could get the supply tonight! I really could use a little something…”
You’ve got to be kidding me. What a pest. “Listen Merrit, I’ll come see you first thing in the morning. I haven’t even sorted or priced anything out yet.”
“Melanie, please!”
“Merrit. You’re bothering me. Kindly leave my room, and I’ll have the goods prepared for you tomorrow morning.” I don’t like being this curt, but I’m too tired. And the last thing I need is him seeing all the illegal tech in that suitcase.
“Oh, alright.” He storms off with a huff. He dares huff at me? That little pest.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$srcg][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
… I wonder if he…
… I grab the small package...
Oh my lord. Everytime I think I’m about to fall asleep I come back out of it.
Well gosh darn it. The pain shooting through my back surely isn’t helping, lugging all that heavy nonsense around at the mall tonight.
I’m gonna roll over.
Maybe I should turn down the heat, i’s getting a bit stuffy in here.
I just really can not get comfortable.
You know what, I’m going to get some ice for my back. This pain is getting to be too much. What time is it? 3:23 AM. I doubt anyone will be awake to see me in my house robe. I’m just going to slip out the door…
I go down the hallway and fill my ice bucket, when I hear a click, a door latch. Just my luck. I peek my head around the corner. Who is wandering down the hallway at this hour? Looks like a Latino gentleman in his pyjamas. I’ve never seen him before. What’s he - wait is he holding a gun? He has a gun in his hand!
I wait for him to turn the corner before running to my room, quickly ducking inside. I latch the door and use the deadbolt. What is someone doing wandering around with a gun? I hope they’re not here for me.
Okay, calm down, they were headed in the other direction. I’m going to pretend I didn’t see anything, and ice my back. And I suppose I will keep my hand-laser on my bedside. Just to be safe.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
The soft sound of animals chirping fills the room.
What- No. It’s 8:00 already? I could cry. What a miserable sleep. And that guy with the gun in the hallway last night… No.
I set my alarm for another hour from now.
Alright, let’s just roll back over…
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
The soft sound of animals chirping fills the room.
Really? It’s 9:00 already? Okay. Time to get up. I flick my wrist to switch off my alarm. I need some food and coffee. I lean over to the small switchboard. Room service, eggs benedict, caramel latte with almond milk… Okay, sounds good.
I grab the suitcase and pop it open on the bed. Inside are a number of smaller velvet bags. I carefully sort out the contents, microchips, small explosives, biological weapons. I grab some vials of MMT and PCDA for Merrit. Maybe I should throw a couple vials of bio diseases in there too. Slippery little weasel.
A buzzing at the door interrupts me. That was quick. Sure enough, my full breakfast waits for me on an automated trolley.
<<set $bguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
His body is so firm, so tan. God, I had a body like his once upon a time.
Oh fuck, that feels good. I run my fingers through his hair, looking down from his honey brown eyes to his broad shoulders. And those pecs. Fuck, those pecs.
“I’m going to come.”
In an instant, reality comes flooding back. I try to catch my breath. Jason wastes no time, hopping up and grabbing his underwear and jeans. No! Don’t put it back on. I look at him lazily from the bed.
“Do you want to stay for a bit? Grab a beer? Or watch some television?” I ask.
He looks at me and smiles. “I’m sorry, I’ve got to go. That was fun though. You know how to get a hold of me.”
There was something a little patronizing about his smile.
“Oh, okay! The transfer already went through, right?”
“Yup. We’re fair and square,” he responds.
And with a wink, he’s gone. Well, now I feel a little cheap. It’s okay. If I wanted romance I would go on a date. I was paying for fun, and for discretion.
I sigh.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$srcb][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I gather the bag I need for Merrit and put it in my purse. As I’m getting dressed I hear a squeaking through the wall. Wait, is that… It’s sex sounds. Really? Have some class. I knock on the wall and hear a squeal of surprise.
Ugh, just think of the money. The reason you’re here. I head down the hallway to drop off the delivery to Merrit. I knock on the penthouse door. I hope he’s home. And not up to anything strange. He opens the door, fully dressed this time, so that’s a start. His usual tacky, wrinkled suit.
“Good morning, Merrit.”
“Good morning.” He seems a bit twitchy today.
“Here you go. Sorry about being… curt last night.” I hand him the black bag.
“That’s quite alright. It was late. What do we have today?”
“MMT and PCDA. PCDA is a new synthetic based off of PCP, but without all the fun side effects of murder and cannabilism. That’s $500,” I say.
“Thanks for the great price, as always.”
“Yes well, you didn’t exactly give me much choice. I think we call that hush money.” I laugh dryly. His dark blue room always makes me wildly uncomfortable. I’ve got to get out of this “man den”. Anyone who has a jacuzzi installed in their bedroom is clearly a sexual deviant.
“Come on, this is a mutually beneficial business arrangement, that’s all.”
“Right. Well, I’m off Merritt. Goodbye.”
<<set $bguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$srcb][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$srcp][$gop]][img[$src9]]
Alright, I think I’ve got everything. My clothes are all back on, and in order. Maybe I should have showered. No, she would definitely smell the soap and know something was up.
Jason’s body is still on my mind. What I wouldn’t give. I head out the front door where a short guy is walking by. Not bad. A bit scruffier than I’m used to.
“Dr. Pascal!” Oh my god, he recognizes me.
“Hi there. You are…?” Just act calm, this isn’t anything weird.
“Merrit Deschamps. I’m the owner of this hotel.” He shakes my hand. His hands are very clammy.
“Pleased to meet you!”
“I recognize you from the news. You are here for that big tech conference, right? Have you been enjoying the place? Funny to see a tech developer in a no-tech hotel.” Does he know what I’m up to? No, I’m just being paranoid.
“It’s great! Great location too, close to everything I need.”
“Perfect. And I trust the gentleman who left before you also has been enjoying the place?” He winked at me. Shit. I had better go.
“I’ve got to get going but it was great meeting you!” This guy has a lot of nerve. I turn, walking away down the hallway.
“I hope you and your wife have a great time in Detroit!” I look back at him, he’s smiling and waving. The smug little bastard. Fuck. I thought I was being careful. I need to get back to Tiffany before she suspects something.<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I step in front of The Dooj, running the story over in my head. We went out for a few drinks a bar called Lapin D’or. We discussed tomorrow’s presentation. Definitely no sex. No Jason.
I step inside and go through a series of machines, the usual process. I scan in my handprint. GloBID pulls up my information from across a global database and updates my image in the system, adding a location tag, so if necessary they can see where I am and where I’ve been.
The part I hate is the nanobot mist. With a hiss thousands of miniscule nanobots are decontaminating me, searching me for anything metal or unusual. Making sure I don’t have any bio weapons. A necessary evil.
I step out of the chamber and into the phase-projector. I scan my watch over the pad, and I am phased directly into the main hallway of my room.
It’s late. Later than I thought. 1:14 AM. Tiffany is already asleep. I slip in beside her, putting my arm around her waist. She makes a small, half asleep sound. I pull in closer, gently pushing some of her hair out of the way for me to snuggle in. I lucked out, no questioning period tonight. But I suppose there is always tomorrow morning…
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I awake to someone on top of me. Tiffany! What time is it?
“Good morning, sunshine.” She smiles at me. I love her smile.
She’s wearing her sexiest negligee. And I’m already at full mast, I realize, with her weight grinding down on me.
“Good morning, Tiff. How did you sleep?” I toss her off of me playfully and stretch.
“I slept much better once you were home.” She pulls up her negligee. Alright, she’s really gunning for this.
“Hey!” She grabs onto the waistband of my boxers, pulling them down and off my ankles.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I snatch my boxers from out of her hands, leaning in to kiss her.
“There will be plenty of time for that later, you pervert,” I say and wink at her. “I’ve got to be at the conference in an hour and a half. I’ve got to get ready to go.”
My watch projects a copy of my closet into the air in front of me. What do I want to wear? Dark gray is always my go to.
“Okay, fine,” she says, wrapping the blanket around herself. She’s bundled up like a little burrito. “How was last night?”
“It was fun!” So much fun. “We went out for some drinks and went over the plans for today.”
Maybe my plum velvet jacket. White shirt and dark gray tie. I think that sounds good.
“Who all was there?”
“Carlos, Anthony and Steven.” As I wave my hand through my closet selection, a rack rolls over with everything I’ve picked.
“What did you drink?” Why is she asking so many questions?
“You’re really putting on the heat today. Do you want the play by play?” I ask.
“No, no. I’m just making conversation.” She sounds normal enough, I guess. Okay, I have to get up and go.
“I’m going to hop in the shower, Tiff!”
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$srcb][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I realize when I’m getting dressed that I don’t have my wallet. Fuck. I search through my bags and side table.
“We’re going to be late if you don’t hurry!” She says. She’s waiting by the door in a top to bottom floral print dress, the usual large roses in her hair.
“I can’t find my wallet. I must’ve left it at the bar last night,” I say. God damnit. By bar, I mean at that shit little hotel. I can’t let her find out. “Oh well, it doesn’t matter right now, let’s just get in the car and go. I’ve got everything I need on my watch.”
It’s showtime. 30 minutes and I’ll be unveiling our new line of nanobots. They’re going to eat this shit up.
We get in the car and head off to the convention center.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I take a sip of my coffee, but it really doesn’t seem to be helping. I’m going to see the hotel owner. He said he had some new stuff.
I pull my jeans up and throw my shirt on over my head. I swing the door open and head down the hallway.
The penthouse looks so far away. The hallway wobbles for a moment and I catch the wall to keep myself upright. Oof.
The red carpet is making me feel nauseous. It seems familiar. I remember my dreams last night, walking through the warm blood. I wrap my arms around myself.
I knock on the penthouse door and wait for a long moment. The door pops open.
“Oh, Kelsey! Come in.” Thank fuck he’s here. He seems surprised to see me, looking down the hallway past me. I step inside.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$srcg][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
Alright, with that dirty business out of the way, it’s time to head out to my real business. Which is also a dirty business, I suppose. I wonder how the construction is going.
I head out and into my car. “2215 Bridle Road.”
My watch buzzes. Jeremy. I’m not in the mood right now. I shake the watch to ignore the call. Does he need to call me a hundred times a day?
Before long, I’m at the arena. It’s an abandoned building, seemingly, but if you enter through the back alley door and walk down the stairs…
Wow. It’s massive. They’ve done so much work since I was here last. We’ve got walls, a big concrete ring, bleachers separated with bulletproof glass. Perfect. I get some nods and waves from the many busy workers. I’m glad they know who I am. I’m the one paying their bills.
I walk over to the construction head, Dane was his name, I think.
“Good morning, Dane.”<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
The convention centre is white and clinical. It must be the cleanest place in all of Detroit. The presentation room is packed with hundreds. We’ve already seen talks of the new space resort opening up on Gliese 832 c and of a groundbreaking water filtration system for irradiated water. Okay, Anthony has finished talking up the research, it’s time for me to get up there.
“And Nathaniel will take over from here to give you the rundown on our new DNA Altering Nanobots.”
The crowd roars. My heart is pounding. Just calm it down. This is what all these last years of work has been for. Okay.
“Thanks Anthony. So as you’ve all heard this has been 17 years in the making and we’ve finally perfected this product. Right here in this small vial are our nanobots.”
I grab the gunmetal vial from out of my breast pocket.
“These nanobot squads, similar to the ones that are likely already flowing through your body, repairing tissues and fighting disease, are injected into your bloodstream. From there they can mass target groups of cell structures in your body and actually change the genetic code within. Yes, we’re talking about becoming a natural blonde without peroxide, changing your eye colour without contacts, but even more importantly, down to the level of changing your genetic predisposition to certain diseases. Now, as you can see from these-”
“I thought these tests were cancelled when those people died!” A voice shouts out.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
“Hey Mr…” Shit, what was his name, again?
“Merrit.”
“Merrit.” I smile at him. This penthouse is huge. It looks a little different than the rest of the hotel. Kind of a den feel. Green walls, dark wood. I see holograms of plants and waterfalls lining the back wall.
“Uhm, how can I help you?” He asks. Oh shit.
“Sorry, I just-” am tripping out, “was thinking about what you said yesterday.”
“Ahh, it sure didn’t take you long to take me up on that. What do you need?”
His suit is dark. And what a strange pattern on his tie. Paisley, I think it’s called. I have to look away from it, it’s making me feel sick.
“Honestly, I’ve been having a shit day. I just need something strong.”
“I actually just had a delivery from M- from my contact. I think I’ve got something you’ll like.” He slips off out of my view.
Wow, a jacuzzi right out in the bedroom? So luxurious!
“So this stuff has been affectionately named Angel Daze. Supposedly it’s like PCP, but without the violent side effects,” he says, coming out from around the corner. He hands me one vial. “Try it. On me. Consider it a sign of good faith.”
He touches my arm and it feels like sandpaper. I shiver and step backwards up against the door. I need to get out of here, I’m so itchy, crawling out of my own skin.
“If you like it, you can come back for more,” he says.

“Oh, Mrs. Musgraves. I didn’t know you were coming today!” He seems a bit frightened. Good. The more frightened they are the easier they are to control.
“Everyone loves a surprise, don’t they?” I smile at him. He’s a great employee. Strong of body and weak of everything else. “Exceptional work here. Are we running on schedule?”
“Ahead of schedule, actually. We will be finished and ready to go by the end of the month.”
“Perfect.” I look around at the workers painting walls and lugging around equipment like so many ants.
“When will the parts be here to start building?” He asks.
“I’m working on getting them smuggled across next week. Setting up some things now. It’s not been easy figuring out how to get such huge parts from overseas.” These robotics have cost me millions. But it’s going to be worth it.
“Great. Feel free to take a look around and let me know if you need anything!”
“You know I will.” He heads off and I look around at my huge, gold mine of a baby.
<<set $bguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
“It is true that two people passed away in the testing of these nanobots two years ago. When they were not programmed correctly they caused the unravelling of DNA within the body, leading to massive cell death, and for one person, cancer. We chose to move ahead, as those who lost their lives to this technology were testing it in the hopes of saving lives. To honour them, we wanted to see this through to its fullest potential. Now we’ll be introducing it to the market, for specific applications, while we continue to expand its endless possibilities.”
Some more shouts come up from the audience. Clearly this has people excited. And angry.
“Dr. Steven Cadence has prepared to show you some schematics and statistics, and is prepared to field some audience questions in just a moment.” I step down to mixed applause.
“What are the implications of this technology as a biological weapon?”
“Doesn’t this go against the Cartell Code implemented in 2660 to stop selective genetic erasure?”
I sit down next to Tiffany. All this heat from the audience is getting to be a little much. Thankfully Steven has extensive media training and knows how to deflect these sort of questions gracefully. People sitting near us are turning their attention to me.
Oh, My wallet. This would be a perfect time to grab it, and make it back for the after party and events today. Plus, this way, I can avoid the whole scene unravelling now.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I get back to my hotel room and slam the door behind me, nearly falling over onto the floor. Fuck. I need to get this stuff in me. C’mon… I wiggle the vial into my injector. The solution is clear with a touch of blue.
I press the metal rod up to my skin, and with a click 3 red dots join the rest on my forearm. I fall onto the bed and scratch at my arms. I hate feeling so itchy, so gross.
How long is this stuff going to take to kick in? Usually with the injector it happens right away.
Maybe I’ll head down to the bar and bring some food back up. I’m starving. When did I eat last? I scratch my head, picking off a scab off from behind my ear. I guess I had better go quickly, Who knows when this will kick in. I head out the door and walk to the elevator.
<<set $rguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
Alright, time to head back out to D-Block Shopping Mall.
No rest for the wicked.
I hop in the car and switch things around in my purse. I’m going to need my lipstick, my E-charger, my wallet. I squeeze them all into my jacket pockets. Okay, just the data chips in here now. Oh and I’ll grab the sweetener packets. I’ll need those. I smile to myself.
I arrive at the shopping mall and hop out. With a wave of my watch my car zips away to park itself. A flash of white.
Okay. The target I’m going to be seeking out is going to be in a bright orange blazer. Uhmmm, I think brunette? I will look through my e-messages. Marcus. There we go. Yes, brunette, bright orange blazer, hoop earrings. Alright, it shouldn’t be hard to spot that level of gaudiness.
The mall is packed today. I guess I shouldn’t have expected anything less on a Friday afternoon.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$srcb][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I get to the bathroom and sit down in the stall. Some else comes in. Please don’t sit in the stall next to me. Okay. They did. I wait for them to finish up before I go.
It’s just too weird to shit next to a stranger! I won’t even take a dump if my wife is around.
I wash my hands and look at myself. There’s paint on my forehead and hair. Whoops.
On my way back to the room I was painting I watch the construction head, Dane, and the lady in the headscarf exchange an envelope. Money. She really must be the boss. She definitely looks large and in charge.
I smirk.
I do my best to not let my eyes linger too long on the mysterious woman in the middle of the ring and hurry back to catch up to Ricardo.<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
“Tiff! I’m going to sneak out and grab my wallet from the bar I left it at last night. I’ll be back in a hurry!”
“What? I don’t know anyone here! I-” She’ll be fine. She’s always such a worrier.
“You’ll be fine! I’ll be super quick,” I respond. I kiss her on the cheek. She pouts at me.
With a shake of my watch, I book it out the side door and my car is waiting for me. Before long, I’m at the Grand Goulding once more. Thankfully It’s only 1:30, I still have plenty of time to grab my wallet. I step into the lobby.
Bzz. Bzz.
My watch goes off. Anthony is calling.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$srcp][$gop]][img[$src9]]
This was a mistake. I float up to the ceiling of the elevator. The patterns in the metal are glittering. The movement makes my stomach churn. The door opens and the light from the windows is so bright. Too bright.
There are people out here. What are they doing? I know that guy at the bar. Merrit. He smiles at me but his mouth is so big. And who is this tall man on the phone. He’s so tall. He’s like a tree. A tree in a fancy purple suit. I laugh.
I’m sitting on one of the lobby chairs. The plush feels so good. I’m going to stay here for a while, I think. I run my fingers across the surface considering the texture.
“Nanobots are especially scary. I mean, imagine a hundreds of tiny little drills ripping you apart from the inside out. Or burning away…”
What? Who said that? The tree man? I can feel my blood pulsing through my body. It feels like everything is vibrating. The little fibres of this couch are alive, feeling me back. I’m so itchy. I scratch my skin but it isn’t really helping.
“We’ve seen killer drones, we’ve seen weaponized androids... Elephants kill sometimes...”
Am I hearing this or making this up in my head? There are so many faces in this wallpaper. Why would they print faces into a pattern? And now they’re moving. I see them as robots, flying up the length of the wall.
Okay. This is too much. I get goosebumps. Little nanobots trying to rip out of my skin. I need to go back upstairs.<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$srcp][$gop]][img[$src9]]
Okay, back in the elevator. There are so many buttons. I look at them for a moment. They all seem like they’re wavering. I press the 3, and it lights up in response. A loud clank shakes the elevator. I imagine the whole thing dropping out from underneath me and I gasp. Oh my god, I would be so dead.
I touch the cold metal walls. What a strange sensation. I squat down to the bottom of the elevator, shrinking away into nothingness. Okay. The doors opened. You can do this Kelsey, just get back to your room.
I step out into the hallway. There’s a lady up here. She has her hair pinned up. It’s so tall. And she has big roses in it. Wow she’s so beautiful. Stop, Kelsey, you’re staring. It comes in waves. I lose myself, and them come back around for a moment to realize what I’m doing.
She seems angry. I’m just going to keep walking. Or running. Run to the hotel room. Wait which one was mine? Not this one, not this one… 8. That’s right I think. Why won’t my keycard work? Oh. Okay it worked. I’m in.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$srcb][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$srcg][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$srcp][$gop]][img[$src9]]
The bed feels so good. I’m sinking into it. I can feel my body melting away, over and over again. It feels like waves are crashing over me. The sensation quickly becomes uncomfortable, causing my stomach to drop. Like being on a roller coaster.
I’m going to put on the television to distract myself. Ugh so many faces. Why does everyone’s face look so ugly. The faces don’t seem real. Is this computer generated? Ew, he’s so old...
I look down at my hands. My fingers look like they’re separating, floating away from each other.
Okay, here’s a cartoon, maybe I can watch this for a while. So many bright colours. But why are the characters moving like that? It’s like they’re jittering. I scratch my skin. I can’t look at this anymore. I flip it off.
What time is it? 4:45. I’ve already been this high for 4 hours?! How long does this shit last? I need to find Merrit.
<<set $rguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I stumble out into the hallway. It feels like my whole body is on fire. I feel my forehead. I’m dripping sweat.
The hallways wobbles from side to side as I walk. It’s not making it very easy. Will you cut it out?! I knock on Merrit’s door. No answer. But it’s open.
“Merrit?” It feels weird to talk. Like my mouth is mushy.
I open the door and feel something odd on the bottom of my foot. The sight of blood sends waves of dizziness through my body. I pull a piece of gunmetal coloured glass out of my foot. The twinges of pain seem to radiate through my body. What a strange sensation. There’s a small smashed, gunmetal coloured glass vial on the floor beside an injector.
I don’t feel the pain in my foot anymore. I poke at it and blood pools. My mind starts racing. Crack. I think the man I shot. The blood pooling around his head. No. No. I can’t. Just find Merrit.
“Merrit?! Are you in here?” I see him on the ground. What is he -
I grab him. His eyes are open. His pupils look like they’re huge, melting out of his head. Something’s not right. I shake him and he doesn’t move.
“MERRIT!” Oh my god he’s dead. I picture blood pooling around him. Did I do this? No. I need to get out of here. I get up and run, stumbling on my cut foot, trying not to fall over.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I make it back to my room, slamming the door behind me.
He’s dead. I can’t believe he’s fucking dead. The room seems dark, like it’s closing in around me. My heart is pounding my chest. I run around the room and open all the curtains. The light hurts my eyes. I close them again.
I see red on the tile beneath my feet. Blood from the cut on my foot. I need to do something. I need to call the police.
“911.” I grab my phone.
“This is the automated GloBID emergency service line. Please provide the nature of your emergency, and stay on the line. We will automatically track your name and location. Thank you.”
“Merrit… There’s a dead man. At the Grand Goulding. I just found him. There was a gunmetal vial. He- he- the door was wide open.”
“Thank you. Sending GloBID ambulance and police.”
I sink down to the floor, curling up beside my bed. I try to stop myself from shaking, violently scratching at both of my arms.
I hear noises coming from outside. It’s so loud. I think about Merrit’s open eyes. His dead body lying on the carpet. I rock back and forth on the ground. When I hear knocking on the door, I stagger over to it, throwing it open.
GloBID agents come in. They look like death machines. I think about hearing the suited man talking about nanobots. Nanobots tearing you apart from the inside out. Thankfully, there is a human officer with them.
“F-Finally. I called for you guys. There’s a dead man-”
“We know about the dead man. Cuff her.” The man motions to me. His furrowed face looks so bizarre, twisting and contorting as he talks.
“Wait, why are you cuffing me?” I let out a scream as the androids shoot out a string that binds around my wrists. They look so horrifying up close and personal like this. All shiny glass with circuitry underneath like veins. I can almost see the circuitry pulsing.
“There’s a literal trail of blood leading from the dead body, to you. Here. Is it really surprising that you’re being taken in?” He motions out the door. The androids pick me up with their long, pointed limbs. Like scythes. I scream again. Please, please no. Put me down.
“I didn’t do anything!” My throat hurts from the effort of screaming out.

Buzz. Buzz.
Jeremy is calling? Again? Oh. My. Word.
“Hello Honey!” He’s so darn clingy.
“Melanie! I just wanted to say hello.”
“Sorry for missing your call earlier, dear! I’ve been so busy! I had an impromptu video conference with some of the ladies from the office.”
I spot a rack of beautiful pashmina scarves. Ooh. Now we’re talking.
“This is a vacation weekend, Mel! You shouldn’t be working,” he says.
I flip through the selection of scarves, watching the light catch on the patterns.
“I know, I’m such a workaholic!”
“Well as long as you’re taking lots of you time, too. You deserve it, doll,” he says.
Do I want this red one, or the intricate green one? They’re gorgeous, I’m taking both.
“Don’t worry, I’m still treating myself. I’m having a great trip. I’ll see you tomorrow afternoon, honey,” I say, a little forcefully so he knows I’m ending the conversation.
“Alright. I love you.”
“I love you too.”<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$srcp][$gop]][img[$src9]]
There she is, finally. Okay. I just passed her so I will have to walk around this floor again and keep an eye out for her.
I was right, that orange blazer is as hideous as I had pictured.
Don’t speed up. Just maintain your pace. Look around normally. Oh, a tacky jewellery store. Wow, look at those off-brand purses. These people are all walking so slow!
Okay, I’m coming around to pass her again. Time to signal. I drop my purse and a small handful of sweetener packets from my pocket. Perfect, she saw me. She crouches down.
“Let me help you ma’am,” she says.
“Why, thank you.”
She puts her own purse on the ground, and I pick it up. She hands me the sweetener packets and grabs my purse from the ground. I don’t think anyone was watching.
Okay, walk off. Let’s peek inside the purse and… the money is in there. I’ll have to count it when I get back into the car.
<<set $bguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
“Hey, Nate.” He sounds panicked. “Man, this is turning into a media frenzy. People are really worked up about this. They’ve taken an intermission to calm everyone down before the next group goes on. Where are you?!”
“I’m so sorry. I had to step out and get my wallet, I left it when I was out.” Clearly I left at the right time.
“They’re going on about the ethics. I mean, these nanobots are meant to help people, not hurt them.”
“They have a point. Nanobots are scary. I mean, imagine a hundreds of tiny little drills ripping you apart from the inside out. Or burning away your DNA or brain cells until you’re nothing but a vegetable,” I say.
“Dude, this isn’t the time for fucking horror stories. Are you serious right now?”
Who is that? I’m briefly distracted by a girl in the lobby who is scratching her skin erratically and looking at me. Fucking tweaker.
“I mean it wouldn’t be the first time. We’ve seen killer drones, we’ve seen weaponized androids. But, but, we’ve always accepted them in the end. Hey, elephants kill sometimes and we aren’t out petitioning to end all of them,” I respond.
“We could really use you over here to help. We need to show a unified front. Get over here.”
Damn, did he just hang up on me? I’ve never seen Anthony this worked up. I walk over to the bar. This day has already been exhausting, I’m not rushing back to the line of fire.<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$srcp][$gop]][img[$src9]]
As I walk to the bar I catch a glimpse of that guy who was harassing me last night. I can’t catch a break. What was his name… Merrit, I think?
Maybe I can get away before. Oh, he saw me. He’s waving me over.
“Dr. Pascal. How did it go?” His smile rubs me the wrong way.
“It went great! I forgot my wallet here though, so I came back to grab it,” I say, sitting down beside him.
“Really, it sounded like things got pretty heated there on the phone.”
“Oh, one of my collaborators is just stressed. He can’t handle all of the high pressure.”
“Let me buy you a drink to celebrate.”
What’s he playing at? “Okay, sure.”
“My way of apologizing for my rudeness last night. What do you drink?” He asks.
“Get me a rum and diet,” I say. He nods condescendingly and waves his hand over the pay tab. The robot server dispenses my drink.
We talk for a short while, it’s relatively pleasant. He asks me questions about the technology conference, and he buys me a couple drinks, which are stronger than I expected.
“So, Mr. Moneybags, what can you offer me to help keep your little indiscretions a secret?”<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$srcb][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$srcg][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$srcp][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I finger through the stacks of cash in the car. 400 grand. Perfect.
I wonder what was on those microchips? You know what, it doesn’t matter. Sometimes the less you know the better off you are.
I step out of the car and wave it away, walking towards the hotel. I think I’ll go out on the town tonight. Have some dinner. Maybe there are some good shows playing in town. I doubt it, but I’ll look into it.
Walking into the lobby I see Merrit storming away from two gentlemen at the bar. He looks livid. Oh, he’s going to the elevator. I’m going to walk very slowly so I don’t get stuck in the elevator with him. I’ve had my fill of him today.
I think I recognize one of the gentleman at the bar. He’s in construction gear. I think he may have been at the construction site today. Oh! He’s the man who was walking around the hallway with a gun last night!
Okay, let’s get up to my hotel room. Why is the only no-tech hotel here full of so many frightening individuals. I step into the elevator.
<<set $bguilt to "guilty">><<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
What am I going to wear tonight? I know, that new slate grey dress would be perfect.
What’s that? Is that a woman shouting? This hotel is too much. I don’t know if I can stomach staying here again.
“Best Restaurants in Town.”
With a flick of my wrist the best restaurants in town are being projected onto the mirror while I get undressed. I partially listen. I already know where I’m going. MicroFoam. I’ve heard it’s exceptional.
I pull the beaded dress over my frame, strategically tucking in less than flattering areas.
Perfect.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I send a 360 hologram to my husband. A little teaser of what he will get when I get back to Windsor tomorrow. I save it. Gosh, I look good in this dress. It’s like it was made for me. I pick out a matching headscarf from my bag. I think blue for this look.
Is that more shouting in the hallway? I hear bickering between a man and a woman, I think. It’s turning into a freaky Friday in here. I’ve got to get going before anything serious happens.
Okay, I’ve got my purse, I’ll reapply my lipstick…
I don’t like this shade actually. I wipe it off partially with a tissue, going over it with a deep plum. Much better. I grab my black heels from my closet and put them on. Yes, the black is working.
I’m all set. I head out into the hallway. What’s that on the floor? Smudges of blood?! Eugh. What in the heck. I walk a little quicker to the elevator. As I get down to the lobby I see flashing lights out on the street. What’s going on out there?
A group of officers and their GloBID squadron come pushing through into the lobby.
“Good evening officers. What’s going on?”
“Units 2 through 4 head up to the 3rd floor. Begin a sweep of the rooms coming down. Unit one we’re going to detain this lady here. Unit 5 and 6 barricade the entrances.”
Is he talking about me? The man comes towards me and with a motion, his GloBID android shoots out a rope that solidifies around my wrists, pulling them tightly together.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Who the heck do they think they’re dealing with.
“There’s been a call about a death on the property ma’am. We’ve been instructed to round everyone up and bring them in.”
“And you think I have something to do with it? You’ve got to be kidding me.” A death?! Who could have died? Was that some of the noise I was hearing earlier?
“Well, considering you were hightailing it out of here… can’t say it looks great. I’m sure it will be nothing. We just have to keep you restrained until we know for sure. If you’re not guilty, why should you be nervous?”
What a rude little man. I consider saying something, but I had better just keep my mouth closed and hope they get this over with soon.

I head into my hotel room at the Grand Goulding. I am in a daze. What a trainwreck. I don’t think things could get any fucking worse than this.
I search through the room for my wallet.
My conference goes ass up. I get blackmailed. I get the shit knocked out of me by my wife. I-
There’s my wallet, under the damn bed. I head into the bathroom to splash some cold water on my face. It’s okay. Everything is going to be okay. This too shall pass, as they say.
I head out into the hallway. The elevator opens and a 1 GloBID squadron comes out the door. 3 androids and an officer. 2 more squadrons come bursting out the stairs. What the fuck? Why are they here? Did they get a call about a domestic dispute maybe or…
“Hello Civilian. You are… Dr. Nathaniel Pascal, according to your GloBID watch, correct?”
“Yes, what’s going on? Is this about the fight?” So embarrassing. I think I’m ready to crawl into a hole and-
“A fight? You tell me. We’re here for reports of a dead body in the hotel. I’m afraid we’re going to have to detain you until we’re finished searching the premises.”
“Of- of course, officer,” I respond.
I normally find these lithe androids pretty beautiful, but they sure seem a hell of a lot less aesthetically pleasing when they’re pinning you against the wall.

I can feel my face burning red. I can’t believe I just tried to kiss someone who wasn’t interested. Clearly I misread something there. Damn. walk past the ice room and turn to see movement inside. Wait, what the fuck. Did that girl have roses in her hair? Just like...
“Tiffany? What- What the fuck are you doing here? Why are you hiding by the ice machine?”
Oof. I hear ringing in my head. She slapped me so hard to took a second to register what had happened.
“Listen, baby, I can explain.” Oooh her face looks scary. She is out for blood.
“Can you? Left your wallet at “the bar” did you? No, as per usual you’re out here fucking other people. You always come to this same hotel don’t you?”
“No, I-” What do I say? Shit, I’m so busted.
“Did you love him? I hope so, because you’re losing this,” she says.
“Do I love who? What are you talking about?”
“So I say no to an open relationship, and you just keep cheating on me. Do you even like women? Is that why you can’t keep your dick in your pants?”
“Tiffany, you know I do, sometimes I just- It doesn’t matter because I love you. Only you.”
“Save it Nathaniel.” She’s gone in the blink of an eye.
God damn. I look down at my wedding ring. What a fucking roller coaster today has been. Should I go after her? No, I had better let her cool off. I know how scary she can be when she’s this mad. Maybe I can sort through this when she’s less angry. I sit down on the floor with my head in my hands. Jesus christ.
I see a lady in a grey gown come out of her hotel room. Please don’t see me, please don’t see me. Phew. “What the fuck did you just say?” I feel my face go red. Does he really think he’s going to blackmail me?
“I’m just wondering how much you value your secret flings staying a secret,” he responds.
You’re kidding me. This greasy little maggot...
“Mr. Deschamps, I know you’re not serious.”
“I’m just wondering, I mean… we can make this a mutually beneficial relationship. I keep your secrets and give you a place for your… fucking around, and you-” That’s it. Before I know it I’ve slammed my drink down and grabbed him by the throat.
“Don’t ever threaten me again, or I can promise you that you will regret it.” I let him go with a push. I feel a bit light headed from the adrenaline. Probably from the alcohol too.
“Are you guys okay?” I turn in surprise to see a rather handsome ochre-skinned man.
“We’re fine, Benny. I was just leaving.” Merrit promptly takes off, giving me a scowl as he leaves.

“That guy is a real prick,” Benny says. He has such a handsome face and a chiseled jawline.
“Tell me about it.” My eyes trail down to the tuft of hair above his green shirt. Oof. Keep your eyes up. Those drinks are making quick work of me.
“Let me buy you a drink.” He waves to the robot who hands me another rum and diet. Another free drink, wow. I’m a lucky guy today. Wait, is he hitting on me?
“Well thanks. Here’s to meeting you, Benny,” I say. He flashes an impish grin back at me.
“And to you…”
“You can call me Nate.”
We engage in a bit of brief small talk, we’re here for work, he’s from Phoenix. I’m really slinging these drinks back fast. I’m feeling a bit hazy. This guy’s not helping matters, sparks are really flying.
“Oh no, I’m sorry, I just realized what time it was. I’ve got to get my wallet and get back to the conference before I miss the after party.”
“I’m headed back to my room too. Might as well wrap up here.” He drinks the last of his beer.
We both step into the elevator and I give him a long look. What is that expression on his face? Is he interested? Fuck it, I’m going to go for it. I close the gap between us, pinning him into the corner of the elevator. I lean in to kiss him. When oof, I fall backwards. He shoved me off of him!
“¡Qué mierda! What are you doing, man,” he asks. Shit. Oh my god. Get me out of this elevator.
“I- I’m sorry I thought you-” He bought me a drink. He was so charming, I mean…
He says something in Spanish and books it out of the elevator.

I get into my hotel room and shut the door behind me. I don’t normally blush but I must be beet red. I can’t believe that guy tried to kiss me.
“Eso fue una locura...”
I call my wife and hop into my bed.
“Hola, baby.”
“Benny!”
“No vas a creer lo que me pasó hoy.”
“¿Que pasó?”
“Un hombre solo trató de besarme.”
“¡Apuesto que te gustó!”
“¡Gabriela! Absolutamente no. Solo quiero tus labios.”
“Dale un par de meses más y estoy seguro de que tomarás todos los labios que puedas.”
“Bueno, es verdad que estoy cachonda. Pero solo pensando en tí.”
“Queda menos de un mes, solo espere un poco más.”
“¿Ponte en video mi reina? Muéstrame tus grandes senos.”
“Wow, eres tan dulce, Un verdadero romantico.”
I unzip my pants and pull out my junk.
“Extraño tocarte, baby. Si estuviera allí, te arrancaría la tanga y …”
I hear something happening outside. Clunking around and voices shouting out.
“¿y luego que?” She asks.
“Hold on baby. I hear something.”
There’s knocking at my door.
“GloBID. Open up,” the voice rings through the room.
“Holy fuck. I’ve got to go. Te amo baby, te amo. I’m sorry.”
“What? Benny, no-”
Click.
The door is busted open as I’m zipping my pants back up. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. It’s a full unit. 3 androids and one officer. How did they find me? How did they know? In another moment the grasshopper-like androids have wound their wire around my wrists.
I’m done for.

Alright. The work is all done. The room has been painted, the projectors installed, Ricardo has long left, and Dane doesn’t have any more work for me. I guess that’s that then. Easiest day of work I’ve had in awhile.
Off early on a Friday night! Sweet. I’m going to go back, have a beer, and give Gabriela a call.
I put my cap on and begin my long walk back to the hotel.

I pass through the winding streets of Detroit. It’s easy to get lost when you can’t see past the highrises, just glimpses of the sky above. Do I go left here, or right? I’ve made this walk enough by now, I should know.
Mierda. GloBID officers. 3 of the glassy, grasshopper looking motherfuckers are coming down the road on the right.
Okay, turn left. You’re not doing anything wrong. They have no reason to stop you. Just keep walking casually.
I take another quick right. Okay, they probably won’t come this way. I take another left, just to be sure. I do my best to relax my breathing. Once I’m certain they’re long behind me I stop to figure out which way back to the hotel? I’m on Ruby. That doesn’t ring a bell. What about this intersection… Okay, Tweed Street. I’ll turn right here and I should be back on track.
<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$srcb][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$srcg][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$srcp][$gop]][img[$src9]]
I walk into the Grand Goulding. This place has kinda begun to feel like a home, which strikes me as very strange. Well, It’s Friday, I’m off early, It’s time for a beer. I start to walk towards the bar.
Oh, maybe not, that asshole Merrit guy is at the bar. Wait- is… that other guy just grabbed him by the throat!
“Don’t EVER fucking threaten me again or I’ll kill you, motherfucker.” He says, holding Merrit by the neck.
“A- are you guys okay?” I ask. Holy shit. This guy is serious. Merrit must have threatened him the same way he threatened me. He seems a lot less scared than I was in his shoes, though.
The guy in the purple suit lets go of Merrit’s throat in surprise, and Merrit turns with a scowl.
“We’re fine, Benny. I was just leaving.” He storms off across to the elevator.
I sit down beside the other man and shake his hand.<<include "Timer">><<set $rn to $rn + 1>><<set $gor to "R" +$rn>><<set $gob to "B" +$rn>><<set $gog to "G" +$rn>><<set $gop to "P" +$rn>>[img[$src1]][img[$srcr][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$srcp][$gop]][img[$src9]]
“He threatened me too man. That guy is a real prick,” I say. He’s all red in the face. This guy looks… so professional. What could he be hiding?
“Tell me about it.” He lowers his eyes in shame.
“Let me buy you a drink, man.” I wave to the robot to refill his drink. He seems like he needs it. I get myself one too.
“Well thanks. Here’s to meeting you, Benny.” He reaches out his drink. ”I’m Nathaniel. You can call me Nate.”
I notice the lady with the headscarf from the underground rink I was working at today walk into the hotel. She’s staying here too. Interesting. I pull my attention back to Nathaniel.
We do a bit of small talk chatting over a couple of drinks. We’re both here for work, he’s from Toronto. He seems really engaged in this conversation. What an outgoing guy. It’s obvious he’s used to dealing with people. Must be tied into what he does for a living. Probably business or sales or something. He says something about having to go get his wallet. I’ve polished off my beer so I might as well get back up to my room too.
We get into the elevator and he gives me a strange look. What is he smiling about? He steps closer to me and pins me against the elevator. What the hell? He leans in to kiss me. I quickly shove him off of me.
“¡Qué mierda! What are you doing, man.” I feel myself immediately flush with embarrassment. Fuck, get me out of here. Is that the vibe I was putting down? I was just trying to be friendly to the guy. I can feel the blood pumping to my face. I rush out of the elevator.
“Puta madre, eso es tan incómodo…”The date is August 29th, 3522. It’s another usual night here in Detroit. By usual, I mean crimes pinging up across the cityscape, lighting up like a… Well, like a police cityscape hologram, because that’s what they do.
I’m Detective Mort M. Castor, a detective and forensic specialist. The reason I am being called out to GloBID police unit #378 on this rainy Friday evening - my day off, mind you - is my specialized training in a recently acquired piece of technology for the GloBID force. In essence, a memory reader. The electroencephalographic decoding, processing and transmission unit. Or as I affectionately call it, the EEGDPATU. Rolls off the tongue.
It’s a fickle little piece of technology, but I know how to wrangle it like a GloBID android unit wrangling an unarmed civilian to the ground. Tonight, I was using it to solve a murder
<div id="center">
[[...|Intro 3]]
</div>The dead man on our hands is Merrit Deschamps, the owner of a hotel, The Grand Goulding, a no-tech hotel not secured and tracked through the GloBID system. A hot spot for troubled individuals. When you go to a hotel you want holographic projectors, phase elevators, completely customizable room features, food and drink options right inside your room. If you go to a no-tech hotel, you’re clearly up to something.
Merrit was very, very dead. But GloBID android analytics couldn’t determine exactly what had happened. Unusual. He was shipped off for further testing. There was no blood, no detectable drugs or poison in his system. That’s a lie, there were drugs in his system, just not enough to have killed him, rather, just enough drugs to keep you going through your day.
There are only four suspects. All four of them staying at the hotel, and thankfully in the hotel at the time of the discovery. They’re all locked up in separate cells, hooked up to the memory system, a small contraption injected right behind the ear. Any conversation with each other, or with me, could contaminate the brainwaves, so they’ve been kept in lockdown.

I sit down at the EEGDPATU control panel, looking up at the projected images of the suspects in their cells. What an interesting bunch. Let’s see…
First we have Kelsey Plath, 32. A strange character. She’s average height, average build, brown hair, brown eyes. She has very pale skin with the kind of scabs and scars on her body that let you she’s thoroughly relishing picking away at them. Dangerously high levels of MMT in her system. Last the GloBID system was aware of her, she was in New York. She was briefly taken in for selling drugs, but eventually let go without charges. She seems to be the most complaint of the bunch. Probably all the MMT. She’s hooked up to the red line.

Next is Melanie Musgrave, hooked up to the blue line. Not the kind of woman you would expect to find tangled up in a murder mystery. She’s a reputable restaurant franchise owner, and clearly a woman of wealth. When we brought her in she happened to be wearing a full gown. She overdressed a little bit for a jail cell, but what do I know about fashion? She’s 66, but doesn’t look it, a full bodied woman with warm umber skin and blue eyes. She’s moved around New America a bit, currently living in Windsor, Ontario. So what brings her to the Grand Goulding in Detroit?

Benny Fernandez is our man connected to the green line. Well, at least Benny is the name he gave us. He’s average height, strong build, around 30, seems like a labour worker given his paint splattered jeans. He has dark hair, dark eyes, and if I had to guess, which is a dirty word in forensic science, I would say he’s of Latin American descent. We don’t seem to have any information for him on file. Is he lying about his identity? He certainly seems anxious, pacing around his cell. I guess I will find out soon enough.

Our last suspect is another esteemed individual, Dr. Nathaniel Pascal. I’m looking forward to getting inside that mind. He’s tall, pale, a little on the gangly side, with a tangle of blonde hair, and green eyes. He’s achieved a lot in his 46 years, here in Detroit from Toronto at a global technology conference, talking about some nanorobotics his team has been developing. He’s flagged in the GloBID system as having had a couple violent outbreaks in the past, but nothing serious. I wonder what brings him to this seedy hotel. He’s hooked up to the purple line.

The downfalls of this technology are linked to the downfalls of our memory. Our brains only store some information and impressions into our memory banks. Sometimes this information is skewed or unreliable. Sometimes long gaps appear, or timelines shift. If I had it my way, I’d be able to see every time they picked their nose or went to the bathroom, because you never know what important information you can pull out of everyday moments. However, since these are typically unmemorable, they are rarely stored in the brain. Instead we get a sort of framework. Stronger thoughts, clearer moments, especially emotionally charged ones.
Another shortcoming is the inability to record. Unfortunately we don’t have the capacity to store this kind of data, not yet. We can only map the brainwaves onto another human’s mind, therefore allowing them to experience the same memories, so my word will be law.
It was mandated in 3521 when this technology first went through testing, that any memories must be accessed within 24 hours. Anything outside of this window will have deteriorated too much to hold up in the court of law. With that in mind, to use this technology we need to act fast. Time moves differently inside of the machine, something to do with being fed these neural waves directly. An hour moves in about a minute, so a ten minute timer will keep me on course. Hopefully I can make it through their memories a couple of times to get the deepest understanding possible, but that isn’t as easy as it might sound.
<div id="center">
[[...|Intro 9]]

[img[$kelsey]]<span></span>[img[$melanie]]<span></span>[img[$benny]]<span></span>[img[$nathaniel]]<span></span>[img[$src1]][img[$src2][$gor]][img[$src3]][img[$src4][$gob]][img[$src5]][img[$src6][$gog]][img[$src7]][img[$src8][$gop]][img[$src9]]
A team works behind me to inject the miniature receiver behind my ear. It’s uncomfortable, but what is a little pain in the name of progress?
The sets of memories are locked into hour intervals, occurring between 8:00 PM Thursday evening and 8:00 PM Friday evening, when they were arrested and brought here. Once I’m fully connected and the probe begins sifting through the grains of time, I can only move forward through the hour intervals. At the end of a memory segment I will use the colour corresponding buttons on the panel in front of me to select whether I view the next hour block from the same person’s perspective, or if I should view the next hour block through another person’s perspective. Once I’ve viewed the events of 9:00 PM through Melanie’s perspective, for example, if I click the red button I will now be viewing the events of 10:00 PM through Kelsey’s perspective.
They’ve installed some updates on the EEGDPATU that I am excited to finally get to try. They’ve interfaced some of their recognition features into the device. If I see one of the suspect’s buttons flashing it can mean one of two things. First, it will alert me whenever the victim, Merrit, is in the corresponding person’s memory. Second, when the EEGDPATU detects another one of the four suspects in the memory I am currently viewing, it will flash their button as well. These should help me get to the bottom of their relationships to Merrit, and to cross-reference their perspectives. Given that I’m moving forward an hour at a time, if I’m unlucky I might miss these connections entirely, even if I click the flashing buttons. Regardless, this should give me some clues, and also help me navigate my second run-through once I’ve made it to the end.

I write up my documentation on Kelsey Plath and submit it to the court. Everyone is let free, except for Kelsey who is kept in her jail cell. She screams out "Why me? What did I do?!"
The court proceedings happen as planned, and although there is evidence of her DNA at the scene of the crime, there isn't a lot else of substance there. Kelsey is unable to afford a very good lawyer, but in the end accepts a plea bargain for a charge of manslaughter. 10 years in jail.
Just a year and a half in, Kelsey overdoses in jail, passing away.
Dr. Nathaniel Pascal's invention becomes widespread, used for a vast number of medical and cosmetic purposes. When a sudden wave of cancer seems to afflict its users, the practice quickly falls out of favour, and is eventually outlawed. This technology still exists, however, in back alleys and secret offices.
Melanie Musgraves goes on to grow her expanding brand, taking over a number of larger restaurant chains including MicroFoam, which she rebrands as MMFoam. Many years later she is caught up in a media scandal when she is found to be linked to an illegal android fighting ring. She's sentenced to only 3 years at an elite facility of her own choosing, and is back to business as usual before long.
Benny Fernandez is never heard from again. He slipped away before I had to the chance to press him on who he really was. Wherever he went, he managed to fly under the radar.
As for me, my superiors were not terribly happy with the handling of the case. I was taken off of the EEGDPATU, and the whole program was eventually dropped, being deemed too unreliable.
I always wonder in the back of my mind if I made the right choice.

For crimes of drug trafficking, distributing bioweapons, and building an illicit android fighting ring, Melanie Musgraves, even with the best possible lawyers, was threatened with jail for life. She just couldn't fight the onslaught of evidence that is brought up against her. However, she vanished before she was able to be taken in. Presumably she lives comfortably elsewhere, enjoying the new life she was able to buy.

I write up my documentation on Nathaniel and submit it to the court. Everyone is let free, except for Nathaniel who is kept in his jail cell. He sits calmly in his cell, shaking his head, looking like he's ready to punch through the door.
The court proceedings happen as planned, and Nathaniel is able to afford an exceptional legal team who quickly are able to get him released due to a lack of evidence.
3 years later, as Nathaniel's nanobot technology becomes more ubiquitous, a reopened investigation finds that it was in fact nanobots that did the work of killing Merrit Deschamps. He is brought back to court, but given the time since the initial uproar, and difficulty coming up with a substantive link between Nathaniel and the crime, he again walks away a free man.
Kelsey Plath makes her way across the country, moving city to city, facing minor charges and small jail sentences here and there. Just a couple of years after the murder of Merrit, Kelsey was herself found dead, investigations tying it back to a mysterious drug lord by the name of Julius.
Benny Fernandez is never heard from again. He slipped away before I had to the chance to press him on who he really was. Wherever he went, he managed to fly under the radar.
As for me, my superiors were not terribly happy with the handling of the case. I was taken off of the EEGDPATU, and the whole program was eventually dropped, being deemed too unreliable.
Perhaps Nathaniel was just lucky, but I always wonder in the back of my mind if I made the right choice.

The court proceedings happen as planned, and Melanie is able to afford the best of the best for her legal team. With the level of involvement that is uncovered during the court proceedings, she just doesn't stand a chance. The trafficking of drugs, biological and technological weaponry, illicit robotic parts. She's sentenced to death for her part as a kingpin in the New American criminal industry.
Despite the sentence, her connections served her well. In the end, she disappears just days before her execution. She has never been heard from since.

You write up your documentation on $name and submit it to the court. Everyone is let free, and the GloBID team sets out to bring in $name for questioning.
When it becomes clear that $name had no connection to the murders, your superiors bring you in for your own questioning. Before long, you're dismissed from your job for reckless misuse of power, and general incompetence. Any other reports you've filed, past or present, are no longer considered reliable, and are tossed out.
Dr. Nathaniel Pascal's invention becomes widespread, used for a vast number of medical and cosmetic purposes. When a sudden wave of cancer seems to afflict its users, the practice quickly falls out of favour, and is eventually outlawed. You always wonder who really committed the murder, and how they did it.I write up my documentation on Tiffany and submit it to the court. Everyone is let free much to their surprise, and they filter out. Melanie sneers at the officers who locked her up. Benny is crying tears of relief.
Tiffany is found later by the GloBID team, crying and alone in the streets of Detroit. She is taken in, and questioned. Shortly after, court proceedings began.
Tiffany was a sight for sore eyes without her signature flowers in her hair. She stood in front of the court and denied all the charges as well as she could between her sobs. Something I found particularly strange was the lawyer fighting against her. I recognized the man, as one of the lawyers that works for GloBID's technology acquisition branch. This was my first sign that something was wrong.
The lawyer claimed that Tiffany knew Nathaniel had been cheating. She believed it was with Merrit, seeing as he was the owner, and her husband Nathaniel would always sneak off to the same hotel for his trysts. She couldn't stand the thought of him being with another person.
She took a vial of her husbands nanobots, not yet programmed properly for human use. Although she intended to use it on Nathaniel himself, when she followed him to the hotel that day and saw him speaking with Merrit, her blood boiled.
Tiffany went up to the third floor and waited for Nathaniel to come up, but instead, she saw Merrit first. She hid around the corner and followed him into the room, injecting him with the lethal nanobots that unravelled his very genetic code. From there, she stormed out, slapped Nathaniel in the face, and wander out into the streets of Detroit, in disbelief of what she had done.
Tiffany's fate was sealed at this point. She was sentenced to death by the GloBID state. She denied her guilt even up until the end when she was executed, but the argument against her seemed airtight. Nathaniel's life unravelled from here, his infidelity being broadcast globally, the love of his life being executed. He stepped down from his position in the company, which prompted GloBID to step in and purchase the company, and the technology that Nathaniel was working on.
Me, I receive a promotion for my exceptional work on the job, and helped work with the development team to further the functionality of this mind reading machine. 5 years later, every person in New America is hooked up to GloBID, which reads their thoughts in every moment of the day. Kelsey was sentenced to jail for the murder of a man in New York. Melanie was sentenced to death for her work as a kingpin in the drug industry. Benny is the only one who got away. No one is safe anymore. For a long time, being one of the developers of this mind-reading technology, I was able to trick the system and remain unhooked, but they discovered what I have done, and now, since they've forcefully implanted the technology in me, they know what I suspect.
I am writing this in the hopes that someone will read it. I'm hiding in my bunker. Not that it matters anymore, they know exactly where I am. I think that GloBID was behind the murder of Merrit, all as part of an elaborate scheme to acquire Nathaniel's coveted technology in order to genetically modify something terrifying. I don't know what yet. An army, maybe, for this war against Mexico? All I know for sure is that having these thoughts against the state is considered treason now, punishable by death. I'm writing this as quickl
They're at the door. It's over for me. I'm so sorry for what I've done to this country i hope thaI, Dr. Mont M. Castor have deduced that the murderer is $name.

Time to collect my thoughts about everything I've seen, and to prepare to write my statement to the court about the guilty party.
